🙌 Missional Moment

Restoring Lives: The Salvation Army’s Adult Rehabilitation Programs

Since its earliest days, The Salvation Army has been committed to ministering to individuals struggling with addiction and social marginalization. In the late 19th century, William and Catherine Booth recognized that many people caught in cycles of poverty and substance abuse needed more than temporary relief. They needed holistic restoration. That vision led to the establishment of rescue homes and inebriate homes in England, offering shelter, spiritual guidance, and practical support to help individuals rebuild their lives.

In the United States, the Adult Rehabilitation Program took more formal shape in the early 20th century and expanded significantly after World War II. Through a faith-based model built around “Soup, Soap, and Salvation,” The Salvation Army provided residential care, work therapy, counseling, and spiritual development at no cost. Men and women were given the opportunity to rediscover dignity, accountability, and lasting transformation.

Today, Adult Rehabilitation Centers continue this legacy of hope and renewal. Across North America and around the world, these programs have helped hundreds of thousands overcome addiction and rediscover purpose through a relationship with Jesus Christ. This ministry is a powerful reminder that God is still in the business of restoration. As we serve here at the Kroc Center, may we remember that every act of compassion can be part of someone’s story of renewal.

✝️ Note from the Pastor

He Heals Our Wounds

In Mark 5:24–34, we encounter the powerful story of a woman who had suffered from bleeding for twelve years. After enduring physical pain, emotional isolation, and financial hardship, she approached Jesus with quiet faith, believing that simply touching His garment would bring healing. In that moment, her faith was met with divine compassion. Jesus not only restored her physical health, but also acknowledged her publicly, calling her “Daughter” and affirming that her faith had made her well and brought her peace.

This passage reveals the heart of Christ as one who heals not only physical ailments, but also the deeper wounds of the soul: rejection, shame, loneliness, and despair. The woman’s healing reminds us that no suffering is too great and no person is too far gone for the compassionate touch of Jesus. Her courage shows us that healing often begins with trusting God even when circumstances seem hopeless.

Many people today carry unseen wounds. Some are walking through grief. Others are facing emotional pain, spiritual struggles, or broken relationships. This scripture invites us to come to Jesus with confidence, trusting in His power to restore and renew. Just as He stopped to recognize the faith of one hurting woman in a crowded place, He still sees each one of us and responds with grace and love. May we trust Him with our wounds and become instruments of His healing presence in our community.
