🙌 Missional Moment
Missional Moment — The War Cry
For more than a century, The War Cry has been one of The Salvation Army’s most recognizable tools for sharing the Gospel. Its roots reach back to the earliest days of the Army, when printed publications were carried into streets, neighborhoods, and public gatherings to proclaim the message of salvation. In 1879, The War Cry was launched in Britain, combining Christian teaching, testimonies, news, and stories of transformed lives in a form that could reach people far beyond the walls of a church.
Salvationists carried The War Cry into communities as part of their personal ministry. Soldiers sold or distributed copies while engaging people in conversation, offering encouragement, and creating opportunities to share their faith. The publication became more than a newspaper—it became a practical expression of the Army’s commitment to take the Gospel directly to people wherever they were.
Today, The War Cry continues to remind us that our mission does not stop when worship ends. Whether through a printed magazine, a conversation, an act of service, or a simple invitation, every Salvationist can carry the message of Christ into the community. The methods may change, but the mission remains the same: to share the love of Jesus and invite others to experience the transforming power of the Gospel.

One Thing You Lack
Mark 10:17–22
In Mark 10:17–22, a rich young man runs to Jesus with an important question: “What must I do to inherit eternal life?” He had lived a moral and disciplined life, faithfully keeping the commandments from his youth. Yet Jesus looked at him with love and saw beyond his outward obedience to the one area of his heart that had not been fully surrendered. Jesus told him, “One thing you lack,” and challenged him to sell what he had, give to the poor, and follow Him. The issue was not simply the man’s wealth; it was that his possessions had become something he could not release in order to completely follow Christ.
This encounter reminds us that following Jesus involves more than doing the right things—it requires surrendering our whole heart. We can faithfully attend church, serve others, pray, give, and live respectable lives while still holding tightly to something God is asking us to surrender. Jesus loved this man enough to identify what stood between him and complete devotion. In the same way, God’s call to holiness reaches beyond our outward behavior and into the deepest places of our hearts, asking whether there is anything we value, trust, or desire more than Him.
This week, allow Jesus’ words to become a personal question: What is the one thing I lack? Perhaps it is not something we need to gain, but something we need to release—a possession, priority, habit, fear, relationship, ambition, or desire for control. The rich young man walked away sorrowful because the cost of surrender seemed too great. May we choose differently. When Jesus reveals what stands between us and wholehearted discipleship, may we have the courage to release it, trust Him, and follow wherever He leads.
