First 5 – Week of October 9, 2017

The latest episode of the Become podcast is available now! It’s a chance to listen in as Lt. Taylor, Lt. Bill, and Bram discuss how they make programming decisions, advance the mission, and much more. Among the interesting things you’ll learn:

– What Lt. Bill’s career plans were before he found The Salvation Army
– Bram’s favorite ride at Disney… and what singer he would take along with him if he could
– Something Lt. Bill and Lady Gaga have in common

Find the podcast at soundcloud.com – just search for “GR Kroc Center.”

Looking for exercise equipment for your personal use? The Kroc is selling used ellipticals for $400 each and step machines for $300 each. Please contact Brent Wilcoxson if interested.

We’re getting going on year two of Casual for a Cause! Last year, the Kroc was able to triple its fundraising for The Salvation Army World Services, and 10% of that came from your contributions. Here’s what you can do:

  • Make a contribution at the Welcome Desk for the privilege of wearing jeans to work on Fridays (with a Kroc shirt)… $2 per week, $5 per month, or $50 for the whole year!
  • Coming soon… buy a special Casual for a Cause shirt (good to have more Kroc shirt options on Fridays) and proceeds will also go to World Services.

Please keep talking up Monster Mash on Friday, October 27. We still have room for several more trunk-or-treat participants, so if you know of another organization or business who would like to participate, you can direct them to the Events page at GrKrocCenter.org to download the form.

A few reminders:

– The event is 5:00 – 7:00PM. Set up will begin at 4:30PM.
– Talk to your supervisor to see if your department is decorating its own trunk.
– The Kroc Center will provide the candy.
– It doesn’t have to be a trunk! Last year we had various themes such as Cinderella’s Castle, Retro Fitness with Richard Simmons, and Ice Cream Shoppe!
– If you are looking for art supplies you are welcome to consult with Megan Lougheed, however please do not take any art supplies from the art room without asking.

This week has a Friday the 13th. If our guests comment on the date, feel free to share some of these facts with them! (Source: timeanddate.com)

  • There is always at least one Friday the 13th in any given year, and never more than three. The next one is in six months (April 2018).
  • In Italy, Friday the 17th is considered unlucky; in Greece and many Spanish-speaking countries, the 13th is bad if it falls on a Tuesday.
  • Famous people born on Friday the 13th: Cuban dictator Fidel Castro… and Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen.

Send an email to RJ Kroc if you see someone going above and beyond for our guests! Here’s an example from this week:

  • Laura was commended for dealing with a couple of “unruly” kids near the main entrance.
  • Chris kept everything going in the aquatics center when they were short-staffed on a Saturday.
  • Wynter helped out in the game room while the other attendants were dealing with birthday parties.
