🙌 Missional Moment

Throughout its history, The Salvation Army has embraced simple yet powerful symbols to communicate the gospel, and the palm frond on Palm Sunday stands as one of those enduring expressions. Rooted in the account of Matthew 21:1–11, early Salvationists carried forward the tradition of waving palms as an outward sign of praise, remembrance, and public witness. In open-air meetings and corps gatherings, palm branches became more than decoration—they were a visible declaration that Jesus is King.

Historically, the Army’s use of the palm frond aligned with its mission to bring the message of Christ into the streets. Just as the crowds lined the road into Jerusalem, Salvationists often gathered in public spaces, waving palms, singing hymns, and proclaiming salvation. The palm became a bridge between Scripture and mission—linking the ancient cry of “Hosanna” with the Army’s ongoing call to share the good news with all people, especially those outside traditional church walls.

Today, the palm frond continues to invite reflection and response. It challenges us not only to celebrate Christ’s triumphal entry but to actively participate in His mission. As we hold or wave the palm, we are reminded that our faith is not meant to remain private—it is meant to be lived out boldly. This week, may we carry that same spirit of praise and witness, lifting high the name of Jesus not only in our worship, but in our daily lives and service to others.

✝️ Note from the Pastor

The King Who Comes in Humility

In Matthew 21:1–11, Jesus enters Jerusalem not on a war horse, but on a donkey, fulfilling prophecy and revealing the nature of His kingdom. The crowds gather, laying down cloaks and palm branches, shouting “Hosanna to the Son of David!” They recognize Him as the promised King, yet many still misunderstand the kind of victory He has come to bring. This moment, known as the Triumphal Entry, is both a celebration and a foreshadowing of the cross that lies ahead.

Theologically, this passage reminds us that God’s ways often challenge our expectations. Jesus comes not in power as the world defines it, but in humility, peace, and surrender. He is the King who conquers not through force, but through sacrificial love. The same voices that cry “Hosanna” will soon fall silent or turn away, revealing how easily human praise can shift when God’s plan does not align with our desires.

As we reflect on this entry into Jerusalem, we are invited to consider how we receive Christ today. Do we welcome Him only when He meets our expectations, or do we follow Him even when His way leads us toward surrender and transformation? This week, let us lay down our own expectations, much like the cloaks on the road, and truly make room for the King who comes in humility, bringing salvation, peace, and new life.
