🙌 Missional Moment

The Salvation Army’s “Hallelujah Lassies”

In 1887, two young Salvation Army officers, Captain Mary Murray and Captain Frances Reed, answered an extraordinary call. At the request of The Salvation Army’s founder, William Booth, they left England and sailed across the Atlantic to begin Salvation Army work in Newfoundland. They became known as the “Hallelujah Lassies.”

Like Abram in Genesis 12, they left behind everything familiar—family, culture, and security—to follow God’s call into the unknown. Traveling by boat, horseback, and on foot through harsh conditions, they preached the Gospel, cared for the poor, and established corps in communities that had never before experienced Salvation Army ministry.

Their story reminds us that faith often requires movement. God still calls His people to step beyond comfort and trust Him with the journey. Whether our mission field is across the ocean or across the street, we are invited to go where God leads, believing that He is already at work ahead of us.

✝️ Note from the Pastor

Called To Go: Faith that Steps in the Unknown

The call of God often leads us beyond what is familiar and comfortable. In Genesis 12:1-9, God called Abram to leave his country, his people, and his father’s household to go to a land that God would show him. The remarkable part of Abram’s story is not that he had all the answers—it is that he obeyed before he knew the destination. By faith, Abram stepped into the unknown, trusting that the God who called him would also guide him. His journey reminds us that faith is not merely believing God’s promises but actively following Him even when the path ahead is unclear.

Abram’s obedience reveals an important truth about the Christian life: God often unfolds His plan one step at a time. We naturally desire certainty, maps, and guarantees, yet God frequently calls His people to trust His character more than their circumstances. Wherever Abram traveled, he built altars to the Lord, demonstrating that worship remained central to his journey. Even amid uncertainty, he paused to remember God’s faithfulness. In the same way, our spiritual journey is strengthened when we anchor ourselves in worship, prayer, and trust in God’s promises rather than in our own understanding.

Perhaps God is calling you to take a step of faith today—a new ministry, a difficult conversation, an act of obedience, or a season of waiting that requires trust. The good news is that the God who called Abram is the same God who leads us today. We may not always know where the road leads, but we can be certain of the One who walks with us. As we follow Christ, may we have the courage to step into the unknown, trusting that God’s purposes are always greater than our fears and His promises are always faithful.
