First 5 – Week of March 1, 2021

WELCOME TO MARCH: Last week, we covered the schedule changes in the March recreation guide. A couple of other operational things to be aware of as we enter the new month:

  • Membership payments will run early on March 2, with a 25% discount as we remain in the Yellow reopening phase.

  • Total building capacity is being increased from 80 to 100 to account for increased activities and overall member usage.

  • Capacity limits in some individual group exercise classes (that don’t require a lot of space or equipment) are increased from 12 to 15.

ACTIVE FAMILIES: As we get ready to open registration for Spring programs next week (listings will be published and available to view in Club Automation later this week), we’re also (quietly) launching a campaign called “Active Families.” It builds on the fact that the Kroc Center has programs and things to do for the whole family, and is meant to encourage families to try new activities and become more engaged both with the Kroc and with each other. The first part of the Active Families campaign is the continuation of our free program promotion for family memberships… if you have ideas for other ways we can encourage Active Families at the Kroc, send a note to Jon Shaner.

CAMP KROC REGISTRATION: We are in the process of finalizing information about summer day camps and working with the CampDoc system to set up registration. Note that camp sign up is NOT handled through the Club Automation member portal or mobile app — we want to direct people to our website (GrKrocCenter.org) for links to the CampDoc system once it is ready. Watch for more information coming soon!

SAFETY REFRESHER: Fights, disturbances, and other shenanigans — Probably the most common example of a disturbance at the Kroc Center is a fight (verbal or physical) between guests. If a fight breaks out:

  1. Notify the Building Supervisor.

  2. Call GRPD if needed; do not endanger your own safety.

  3. Locate the person(s) involved; stay calm; NEVER try to handle a situation beyond your control.

  4. If an assault has occurred and an injury involved, provide care to life threatening situations and enact appropriate first aid response procedures.

  5. Verbally instruct patrons to stop fighting. Be mindful of your non-verbal messages; be direct and reassuring.

  6. If patrons do not stop fighting, inform them that the police are on their way.

  7. When the fighting has stopped, try to separate the individuals by asking each to step aside to answer questions or to administer first aid, etc.

  8. Complete necessary accident/incident forms.

  9. Contact Department Manager if needed.

CUSTOMER SERVICE KEYS: Having recently reviewed each of our customer service keys in daily huddles, here’s a pop quiz to help you put all the information together…

A member stops to ask you a question while you are on your way to clean up a puddle of water in the gym hallway floor. How can our four keys help you decide how to handle this situation? What could we say to the member? Brainstorm in your department, and we’ll discuss in Tuesday’s huddles (and in next week’s First 5).

Send an email to RJ Kroc if you see someone going above and beyond for our guests! Here is a recent example:

  • Mega-congratulations to Aquatics Manager Jessica Viau for completing virtual water safety lessons with our friends at Brookside Elementary School! Jessica conducted 25 online sessions over the course of the past two weeks as a replacement for our usual in-person swim lessons. If you have ever attempted a Zoom meeting with a group of 7-year-olds, it is NOT easy! Each of the students is also receiving a voucher for a free session of lessons at the Kroc, so we hope to see them back here soon.

Here are some of the upcoming events and groups at the Kroc Center:
