First 5 – Week of August 13, 2018

All-Staff Meeting: Mark your calendar for Wednesday, September 5 (during maintenance week) and our next all-staff meeting. We will start at 4:30pm with everyone together, then at 6:00pm departments will split up and hold their own meetings as needed. Dinner will be served; attendance is required.

Cell Phones: It has been a while since we have passed along a reminder about the Kroc Krew guidelines for cell phone use during your shift. Please read it over and talk to your supervisor with any questions.

In an effort to give the best attention to our members, guests, and coworkers, personal cell phones are not permitted to be used during a work shift unless special permission is granted by a direct supervisor for emergency or work purposes. Cell phones should be turned off and kept out of sight during work. Phone use is permitted only during a scheduled break in one of the designated break areas or outside the building. Kroc Krew members may receive emergency phone calls via the Welcome Desk (616.588.7200) if necessary.

All managers are responsible for addressing any Kroc Krew member seen using a cell phone while on shift and will direct the person to put the phone away. A second infraction will result in a written warning.

Fine Art Fridays: During the month of August, we are holding Five “Fine Art Fridays.” Each person who brings in a donation of new art supplies will receive 50% off their day pass. The main goal of this promotion is to raise awareness of our campaign for $5 fine arts programs for members in the fall. Please see the display in the lobby for more information.

Monster Mash Invitations: If you know a business or organization who may be interested in giving out candy and information at our annual Monster Mash on Friday, October 26, please send contact information to Jon Shaner at jon_shaner@usc.salvationarmy.org.

Maintenance Week Ahead: The Kroc’s annual maintenance week is less than a month away. We will close early on Labor Day and remain closed through the following Sunday, September 9. This time is used to clean the building top to bottom and requires LOTS of help. Please be thinking about what hours you can be available to assist us during this busy week… (we also tend to have a little fun in the process!)

Send an email to RJ Kroc if you see someone going above and beyond for our guests! Here are some examples from this week:

  • Our archery instructor, Tom Kelly, received a shoutout from a thankful mom: “I wanted to let you know what a gift Tom Kelly is to your program… I took a short video of [my son] shooting last Friday, and [Tom’s] voice is in the background saying, “Focus on the shots you feel good about. The rest you forget– they never happened. … I want to hear you say ‘I tried my best.'” I absolutely love that I caught those encouraging words and made [my son] listen again to help reinforce those lessons in positive self-talk.”
  • Special thanks to everyone who helped put together and execute the National Night Out event last Tuesday. While the rain kept most people away and forced us to end early, we received positive feedback from the other organizations in attendance. RJ showed up for a bit too… even the dogs were happy to see him!

[NOTE: no dogs were eaten by RJ during the event.]
