🙌 Missional Moment
The Tradition of the Salvation Army Brass Band
The brass band has been part of Salvation Army ministry since the movement’s earliest days. In the late 1800s, Salvationists discovered that brass instruments were especially effective for open-air meetings because they were portable, durable, and loud enough to draw attention on busy streets. What began as a practical way to support outdoor evangelism quickly became one of the most recognizable traditions of The Salvation Army.
But the band was never intended simply to provide entertainment. Salvation Army bands marched into neighborhoods, played on street corners, accompanied congregational singing, and helped gather crowds so the gospel could be proclaimed. The music became a ministry tool—taking worship outside the walls of the Corps and bringing the message of Christ directly to the people.
Today, the sound of a Salvation Army brass band reminds us of our continuing mission to go where the people are. Whether through music, service, preaching, or compassionate care, our calling remains the same: to make Christ known beyond the walls of our buildings. The instruments may provide the sound, but the mission gives the music its purpose.

Can I Trust God?
Romans 8:28–39
Romans 8:28 reminds us, “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him.” Paul does not tell us that everything we experience will be good. There will be disappointments, losses, unanswered questions, and seasons when we cannot understand what God is doing. Yet our confidence is not found in our circumstances; it is found in the character of God. We can trust Him because even when we cannot see His plan, He is still at work.
Paul goes on to remind us that if God is for us, nothing can ultimately stand against us. The greatest evidence that God can be trusted is Jesus Christ. God did not spare His own Son but gave Him for us, demonstrating the depth of His love and His commitment to our salvation. Trusting God does not mean we will never struggle, question, or experience hardship. It means we believe that God remains faithful in the middle of it all. His presence does not disappear when life becomes difficult, and His promises do not change when our circumstances do.
Paul closes Romans 8 with one of Scripture’s greatest assurances: nothing can separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord. So, can I trust God? Yes—not because I understand everything He allows, but because I know the One who holds me through it. This week, when circumstances tempt you to question God’s goodness, remember what He has already demonstrated through Christ. Trust Him in what you understand, trust Him in what you do not understand, and rest in the assurance that nothing you face can separate you from His unfailing love.
