🙌 Missional Moment

Called to Be a Holy People

From its earliest days, The Salvation Army understood that its mission was not simply to rescue people from difficult circumstances, but to lead people into a transformed life through Jesus Christ. William and Catherine Booth were deeply influenced by the Wesleyan holiness tradition, which taught that God desires to sanctify His people and empower them to live lives marked by love, obedience, and service. Holiness was never intended to separate Salvationists from the world—it prepared them to enter the world as faithful witnesses for Christ.

This understanding helped shape the Army’s commitment to both evangelism and practical service. Salvationists preached in the streets, visited homes, cared for the poor, fed the hungry, and reached people others often overlooked. Their outward service flowed from an inward commitment to Christ. The call of 1 Peter 1:16, “Be holy, because I am holy, “reminded them that belonging to God should be visible in the way they lived and served.

That same calling remains ours today. Our programs, ministries, worship, and service are most powerful when they flow from lives surrendered to God. Holiness is not withdrawing from the world; it is belonging completely to God while faithfully serving the world He loves.

✝️ Note from the Pastor

The Call to Holiness
1 Peter 1:13–16

Peter reminds us that following Christ is more than believing the right things—it is allowing God to transform the way we live. He calls believers to prepare their minds, remain spiritually alert, and place their hope fully in the grace of Jesus Christ. Then comes the unmistakable command: “Be holy, because I am holy” (1 Peter 1:16). Holiness is not reserved for pastors, saints, or especially spiritual people; it is God’s calling for every believer.

Holiness does not mean that we have reached perfection or never struggle. It means that we have been set apart for God and are continually surrendering every area of our lives to Him. Through the transforming work of the Holy Spirit, God changes our desires, attitudes, words, and actions so that our lives increasingly reflect the character of Christ. Holiness is not simply something God asks from us; it is something His grace makes possible within us.

This week, ask yourself: Is there an area of my life that I have not fully surrendered to God? The call to holiness invites us to move beyond simply knowing Christ to becoming more like Christ. May we allow the Holy Spirit to search our hearts, remove what does not belong, and shape us into people whose lives clearly reflect the One who called us. He is holy, and by His grace, He calls us to be holy too.
