🙌 Missional Moment

Catherine Booth and the Courage to Speak Truth

One of the greatest strengths of the early Salvation Army was its commitment to proclaiming God’s truth without compromise, regardless of opposition. Catherine Booth, co-founder of The Salvation Army, was known not only for her powerful preaching but also for her unwavering conviction that the Gospel must be preached faithfully and boldly. During the late 1800s, many critics objected to her ministry simply because she was a woman preaching in public. Rather than yielding to cultural pressure, Catherine carefully studied Scripture and stood firmly on God’s Word, believing that truth must be obeyed even when it was unpopular.

Catherine often reminded Salvationists that the goal of ministry was never to win approval from society but to faithfully proclaim Christ. She challenged believers to resist the temptation to alter the message of the Gospel in order to gain acceptance. Her conviction helped shape The Salvation Army into a movement known for taking the message of salvation to those who had been forgotten by society while remaining firmly grounded in biblical truth.

Today, Catherine Booth’s example reminds us that every generation faces pressure to soften, reshape, or redefine God’s Word. As followers of Christ, we are called to lovingly and faithfully proclaim the truth of Scripture, trusting that God’s Word has the power to transform lives just as it did in the days of the early Salvation Army.

✝️ Note from the Pastor

Let the Truth Be the Truth

Paul’s charge to Timothy in 2 Timothy 4:1–5 is as urgent today as it was when it was first written. Standing before God and Christ Jesus, Timothy was commanded to preach the Word faithfully, remain prepared in every season, and guard against the temptation to compromise truth. Paul warned that a time would come when people would seek teachers who tell them only what they want to hear rather than what God has spoken, turning away from truth and embracing messages that satisfy personal desires instead.

God’s Word is not ours to reshape, revise, or reinterpret to fit the culture of the day. Scripture is life-giving because it reveals the character, will, and salvation of God through Jesus Christ. When we attempt to bend truth to accommodate our preferences, we rob ourselves of the transforming power that comes through obedience to God’s unchanging Word. Christ declared, “I am the way and the truth and the life” (John 14:6), reminding us that truth is not merely a concept but is ultimately found in Him.

This week, I encourage you to spend time in God’s Word with a heart that is willing to listen rather than merely looking for affirmation. Ask the Lord to reveal areas where His truth needs to shape your thinking, your decisions, and your relationships. As followers of Christ, may we stand firm, speak truth with love, and allow God’s Word to remain exactly what it is intended to be—the unchanging truth that leads us into freedom, holiness, and eternal life.
