🙌 Missional Moment

Recognizing the Ministry of Officer Spouses

From its earliest days, The Salvation Army has affirmed God’s call on both women and men for ministry. William and Catherine Booth championed the biblical conviction that women were called to preach, teach, lead, and serve alongside men. As a result, women have served as commissioned Salvation Army officers since the Army’s founding in 1865, leading corps, sharing the gospel, discipling believers, and meeting human needs in Christ’s name.

For many years, however, married officer couples generally received a single officer allowance, even though both husband and wife were commissioned officers who often shared equally in the responsibilities of corps leadership, pastoral care, administration, visitation, preaching, and community ministry. As the Army continued to recognize the unique calling and responsibilities of each commissioned officer, many territories—including the USA Central Territory—transitioned to providing separate compensation for each appointed officer, affirming that each individual’s ministry and calling carried equal value.

This milestone reflects more than a change in compensation—it demonstrates The Salvation Army’s enduring commitment to recognizing and supporting the ministry of every officer. As we remember this important part of our history, may we give thanks for the generations of faithful officer couples whose shared service has strengthened corps, transformed lives, and advanced the mission of preaching the gospel of Jesus Christ and meeting human needs in His name without discrimination.

✝️ Note from the Pastor

Broken But Not Defeated

Job 2:1–10 reminds us that faith is not measured by the absence of hardship but by our willingness to trust God in the midst of it. Job had already endured unimaginable loss, yet another test came when Satan was permitted to afflict him physically. Covered with painful sores from head to toe, sitting among the ashes, and even hearing the discouraging words of his own wife, Job refused to abandon his faith. Instead, he declared, “Shall we accept good from God, and not trouble?” (Job 2:10). Though broken by suffering, Job was not defeated because his confidence remained anchored in the Lord rather than in his circumstances.

There are seasons when life seems to bring one trial after another. We may wonder why difficulties continue even after we have remained faithful through previous storms. Job’s story reminds us that God’s purposes are often greater than what we can see. While the enemy sought to destroy Job’s integrity, God was refining and revealing a faith that could not be shaken. The Lord never abandoned Job in his suffering, and He will not abandon us either. Our trials do not define us; God’s presence, sustaining grace, and unfailing promises do.

As we face the coming week, I encourage you to bring both your victories and your burdens before the Lord. If you feel weary, discouraged, or broken, remember that God is still writing your story. The ashes are not the end of the journey. In Christ, brokenness is never the final chapter because His grace is sufficient, His strength is made perfect in our weakness, and He is able to carry us through every trial. Let us continue to trust Him, knowing that while we may be broken for a season, through His faithfulness we are never defeated.
