🙌 Missional Moment
Returning to Our First Love
From its earliest days, The Salvation Army has understood that its mission must flow from a passionate love for Jesus Christ. William and Catherine Booth did not begin a movement simply to build churches or establish programs. They were compelled by the love of Christ to reach people others had overlooked—the poor, the hungry, the addicted, and those who felt forgotten. Their love for Christ became visible through their love for people.
Revelation 2:1–7 reminds us that it is possible to work hard for God while slowly losing the passion that first motivated the work. The same warning applies to our mission today. Our programs, ministries, worship services, community outreach, and acts of service are important, but they can never replace a living relationship with Jesus. Salvation Army mission is strongest when service is not simply something we do, but the natural expression of who we are becoming in Christ.
Our challenge is the same one Jesus gave the church at Ephesus: Remember. Repent. Return. Remember why we began serving. Repent when ministry becomes routine or mission becomes merely another task. Return to Jesus as our first love and allow His love to renew our love for others. When we return to Christ, our mission becomes more than activity—it becomes the light of Christ shining through us as we love God, love others, and serve the world.
✝️ Note from the Pastor
Remember, Repent, Return
Revelation 2:1–7
In Revelation 2:1–7, Jesus speaks to the church in Ephesus—a church known for hard work, perseverance, and faithfulness. Yet beneath everything they were doing right, something important had been lost: “You have forsaken the love you had at first” (Revelation 2:4). They were still serving, still working, and still standing for truth, but their relationship with Christ was no longer marked by the same passion and devotion. Jesus calls them to remember where they had been and recognize what had changed.
Jesus then tells them to repent. “Consider how far you have fallen! Repent and do the things you did at first” (Revelation 2:5). Repentance is more than feeling sorry; it is recognizing where we have drifted and deliberately changing direction. We can become so busy doing things for God that we neglect our relationship with God. Jesus does not simply point out their failure—He invites them to rediscover the love, devotion, and spiritual passion they once knew.
The message to Ephesus is also Christ’s invitation to us: Remember. Repent. Return. Remember the love and joy you had when Christ was at the center. Repent of whatever has distracted you or caused your heart to drift. Then return—not simply to religious activity, but to Jesus Himself. The good news is that when we realize we have wandered, Christ is still calling us home. Today, ask yourself: Has my relationship with Jesus become routine, or am I still loving Him with the passion I had at first?
